In short, “CF” means “Close Friends” on Instagram. The expression refers to a special category of friends on the platform, so it has a literal meaning.
You can share private moments and stories with them that your regular friends won’t see. Think of it like a private group of your closest friends.
Moreover, one can see your list of close friends and won’t know when you add or remove someone from your “CF” list.
But there’s much more to be said about “Close Friends” on Instagram, so make sure you check out my guide below!
What Can I Share with Close Friends?
We’ve established that “CF” means “Close Friends” and that these friends will have access to your private moments, unlike regular friends.
But what can you do with this feature?
Here are some of the things you can share with your Close Friends on Instagram:
- Private things you don’t want regular friends to see / things your regular friends may not be interested in;
- Subscription materials for clients who have paid for certain training or other subscription-based materials from you;
- Exclusive content that isn’t available to your regular friends. It’s like a “club” that only Close Friends have access to;
- Communicating with work colleagues on certain projects or for online meetings.
- Organize private events for your closest followers who have proven their dedication to your content
- Test Instagram content (stories, pictures) before posting them to your regular followers
The “Close Friends” feature isn’t only used to share goofy, private content with your family or other close friends, as you can see.
It’s perfect for managing specific segments of your online business or enhancing your social media presence with private events.
Benefits of Using the “CF” Feature on Instagram
You may not have thought about it, but what is “CF” good for aside from personal stories? Does it bring other benefits you’re not aware of?
It does, in fact. Here are some of the benefits of using the “Close Friends” feature on Instagram:
- It creates a tight bond between you and some of your followers who are your close friends
- You maintain a certain degree of privacy with the posts you share with your Close Friends since regular friends won’t see them.
- Increased visibility because of the “Close Friends” tag. Those individuals are more likely to see these posts than regular posts.
- You can open polls to check the pulse of your community and find out what people think about you or what type of content they want from you.
- You can maintain contact with your friends and family even though you’re a famous blogger or internet celebrity.
So, the “Close Friends” feature is beneficial whether you’re famous or not. Everyone finds a use for it, eventually. Hopefully…
But how do you add friends to your “Close Friends” list on Instagram? Yeah, have a look below 😀
How to Add People as “Close Friends” on Instagram?
It’s really not hard to add someone to your “Close Friends” list on Instagram. Just watch me do it and follow the steps:
1. Tap on your profile picture
Begin by opening Instagram on your phone and selecting your profile picture in the bottom-right corner. This will open your profile page, which is where you need to be right now.
2. Tap on the three-line icon in the top right corner
Your profile page shows all manner of information about your activity on the platform. Ignore that for now. Just focus on the Menu icon (three-lines icon) in the top-right corner.
3. Select “Close Friends“
See the menu that spontaneously appeared at the bottom of the screen? Find the “Close Friends” option on it and tap it, yeah!
4. Select people that you want to add as “Close Friends“
Once you’re on your “Close Friends” list, you should see all your current friends on Instagram. Look through the list and find those people you want to add as “Close Friends“.
Next to their names, you’ll see circle markers. Tap on the circle marker corresponding to a specific person to add them to the list.
You don’t need to save these settings. Instagram will do it automatically. You can continue check-marking more people to add as your close friends on Instagram.
How Can You Post Stories for Close Friends?
You’ve learned what close friends are on Instagram, the benefits of this feature, and how to use it. Now, you should learn how to post stories for your close friends only.
Take a look below:
1. Tap on the “+” icon in the top-left corner
If you’re already on Instagram, go back to the home page and tap on the “+” icon in the top-left corner. This will let you post a story to your close friends.
2. Select “Story“
Once you tap on the “+” icon in the top-left corner, a menu will appear with four options. Select the “Story” option from the list and keep following my instructions:
3. Select “Camera“
After you select “Story“, you’ll get to the “Add to story” page. Here, you can either select “Camera” to take a new photo or select a photo in your gallery.
We’ll take a new photo to share as a story for this video, so you tap on “Camera” too.
4. Take a photo
After you select “Take photo“, you’ll get to a page where you can take your photo for the Instagram story. Tap on the white button at the bottom to take the shot (camera shot).
5. Tap on “Close Friends“
After you take the picture, look at the bottom of the screen for the “Close friends” button. This button will appear even if you don’t have any close friends at all.
Select it and keep reading:
6. Select your close friends and tap “Done“
On this page (see above), you’ll be able to select the close friends you want to share the story with. I have no close friends on Instagram, so I can’t select anyone.
But you should have several close friends by now. Please tap on the checkmark next to their names to select them. Select “Done” to finish.
7. Post the story
The last step is posting the story. You should see the “Post” icon in the bottom-right corner, the one showing an arrow pointing toward the right.
Give it a tap and you’re done. I hope I’ve been able to clarify what “CF” means on Instagram and how you can make use of it.
If not, leave a comment below and I’ll try to explain better!
How do you know if you’re on someone’s close friend’s list?
There’s a way to know if you’re on someone’s “Close Friends” list on Instagram – look for a green ring around their stories.
Stories meant for close friends will have a green ring around them. Regular stories will have a different color.
So, if you’re not sure you’re on someone’s “Close Friends” list, look for a green ring the next time they post a story.
You’re not on their “Close Friends” list if you can’t see one. If you see one, then you’re good.
Instagram doesn’t notify you if the other person removes you from their “Close Friends” list, so you’ll need to watch out constantly.
Another way to know if you’re someone’s close friend on Instagram is to ask them. It’s the simplest method!
Does Instagram automatically add close friends?
No, it doesn’t. However, the “Close Friends” feature will be automatically enabled when you create your account.
This means that Instagram will “recommend” suggestions for your close friend’s list. You’re still in control, though.
Instagram doesn’t add someone to that list without asking you. If you never visit the “Close Friends” page, you’ll never have close friends on Instagram.
Instagram will keep recommending friends to add as close friends, and you may notice this when you post stories.
The “Close Friends” button will be in the bottom-right corner. Tap it, and you’ll see your “Close Friends” list.
The list will be empty if you don’t have any close friends, but you can add close friends on the spot.
