Did you know that you can create polls on Facebook Messenger? Well, you must have known since you’re here, reading this. 🙂
What you might not know is that you can’t create a poll on a private chat with a single person. Only groups are eligible for polls… (terrible design, right?… that’s Zuckerberg’s app for you.)
But let me not waste your time with lame joke attempts…
This is how you can create a poll on Facebook Messenger:
- Create a group with multiple people on Messenger
- Tap the “Plus” icon in the bottom-left corner of the group chat window
- Select the “Poll” icon
- Add questions and answers, and select “Create Poll“
Wondering how to create a group chat and a poll? Don’t worry! Below you’ll find a step-by-step guide (with screenshots) on how to do all this, so keep reading, please!

First, you need to create a new group chat on Messenger.

1. Create a group on Messenger
To do this, tap on the Pen icon in the top-right corner when you open Messenger.

To begin this guide, you’ll want to create a group chat first. That’s the basis of any poll. As I said, you can’t create polls on private chats with another person.
It HAS to be a group chat.
Look for the pen icon in the top-right corner of the “Chats” section on Messenger (the default homepage for Messenger).
Select it and look below:
2. Select “Create a group chat“

This next page (see above) will let you invite anyone to a private chat. But you might have noticed the “Create a group chat” icon waving at you.
Don’t ignore it and give it a tap!
3. Add the group participants

On this page (pictured above), you’ll notice a list of all your friends, as well as a search bar at the top of the screen.
At this point, you’ll have to choose the group participants. You can do that by tapping on the circle next to each person’s name.
Doing that will fill up the circle in blue and show a checkmark – this means that person will be invited to the new group.
Now, all you have to do is search for everyone you want to invite to the group and check their names. When you’re done, tap the “Next” button in the top-right corner.
Simple as that!
4. Name and create the group

Next up, you’ll want to tap the “Create” button (colored in blue, in the top-right corner) to create your group chat.
But don’t forget to add a name – tap the text box under the “Name your new chat” heading (image above).
5. Tap the + icon

Once the chat group is created, you’ll be automatically redirected to it. Now, in order to create a poll, you’ll have to tap the + icon in the bottom-left corner (check the screenshot above).
We’re ALMOST finished. Just one more step!
6. Tap the “Poll” icon and create the poll

Here we are. On the bottom half of the screen, you’ll see a couple of options and menus. Make sure you select the “Poll” icon (see the screenshot above).
This will make a poll template appear below. Write the poll question, then give the possible answers, and finally trap the blue “Create Poll” button at the bottom of the screen.
After creating the poll, it’ll appear on the group chat (see below).

Now people will be able to vote on the poll, including you.
To vote, tap “Vote” and select one of the two poll options.
And that, my friend, is all you need to know about creating polls on Messenger. Got any questions? Leave a comment below, and I’ll be right by!
