How to Poke Someone on Facebook?

The poking feature had become a tradition back in the days of Facebook’s infancy and it’s still around today.

When you poke someone, it’s like asking them “Hey, are you still alive?” without actually asking them.

To poke someone, you need to open the Facebook app, use the search function to look for “Poke,” and then select one of your friends. Simple!

Follow these steps:

  1. Open Facebook, tap on the search button
  2. Search for “Pokes”
  3. Search for your friend and poke them
  4. Wait for them to receive a notification
  5. Open the “Poke back” notification

If you don’t know your way around the Facebook settings, following these steps may be difficult, which is why I’ve created a step-by-step guide to help you. Read it below!

How to Poke Someone on Facebook?

What Does Poking Do on Facebook?

As far as we know, poking is unique to Facebook. The feature was one of the earliest features that Facebook introduced when it first appeared.

If you wanted to talk to someone you haven’t talked to in a long time, what better way to do it than by poking them?

Poking can signify friendship, love, and a subtle joke between friends. Annoying people with it is also a thing.

There’s also no limit to poking, meaning the other person can poke you back, then you poke back, and they poke back, and… you get it.

It’s quite curious that poking on is very popular even today, 18 years after it was initially launched.

But enough about that.

How Can You Poke Someone on Facebook?

Contrary to popular belief, you can’t poke someone on Messenger, so it’s not like a message.

Instead, you need to open the Facebook app, use the search function to look for “Poke,” and then select one of your friends to poke.

They’ll receive a notification from Facebook that you poked them. Then, they can choose to poke you back. We’ve been through this, alright?

If they poke you back, you’ll receive a notification about this too.

Just follow these steps to do it:

1. Open Facebook and tap on the search button

Open Facebook tap on the search button

Begin by opening Facebook and tap the search button (magnifying glass icon) in the top-right corner. It’s next to the Messenger icon but check the picture above for context!

2. Search for “Poke” and select the Facebook feature

Tapping the search icon will launch the search function – type in “Poke“, start the search, and select the first option on the list (the Facebook feature – see the picture above).

3. Search for your friend and poke them

Now, all you have to do is poke a friend. You should see a list of all your Facebook friends (see picture above). Each will have a blue “Poke” button next to them.

So give the “Poke” button a….poke to….poke your friends 😀

4. Wait for them to receive a notification

Your friend will receive a Push notification from Facebook that you poked them.

If they open the notification, Facebook will let them know you poked them just now.

It’ll show your name there. Also, they’ll have an option to poke you back. Which they surely will.

If they do, you’ll receive a Push notification that they poked you back.

Open the notification and look at the notification. Then poke them back again. And again. And again!

5. Open the “Poke back” notification

You can keep doing this for as much as you like, essentially.

Until one of you doesn’t poke back, at least. That’s when the poking chain stops. Or the other person blocks you.

Remember that you won’t receive a “poke” message on Messenger.

The Poke feature is not a message but a notification-based feature.

You’ll even receive a notification from Facebook on your email address.

You can click on “View on Facebook” to see the same notification above and choose to poke your friend back.

If your friend ignores your poke and instead sends you a message, you can’t poke them again or poke them back.

Only if they reply with a poke can you continue the poking game.

Conclusion

Poking is a great icebreaker if you haven’t talked to someone in a long time.

It’s a playful and humorous way of getting a conversation started.

However, it wasn’t always like this. Back in the day, poking had a bad reputation for creepy behavior.

It was something that many stalkers did when contacting strangers.

A poke could only be a greeting, love confession, or prank. You never know, and that’s what makes it special.

To poke someone on Facebook, go to Search – Pokes – Poke your friend.

FAQ

When did Facebook stop poking?

Back in the day, you couldn’t mention Facebook without talking about poking.

It was the hot new feature that everyone was using.

It was a sign of greeting, love, flirtation, or simply a way to start a conversation.

Even between strangers, poking was a widely-used feature.

However, as the years went by, Facebook decided to implement new features, and poking lost its popularity.

It started in 2011 when Facebook brought some changes to the News Feed and the story feature.

The Poking feature lost its popularity more and more as Facebook brought fresh features that caught the public’s attention.

Eventually, Poking became a niche feature that not many remember exists.

Even now, Poking can only be found through the search box if you are actively looking for it.

Otherwise, it’s not an active feature you can use whenever you want, at least not on Messenger.

Still, you can surprise your friend or partner with a friendly poke on Facebook from time to time!
