How to Fix TikTok Messages Not Working?

Can’t you send direct messages to people on TikTok?

It’s a generalized problem that seems to affect more users daily.

Three things cause the issue:

  • The person you’re trying to contact is not your friend
  • You’re under 16 years old
  • The other user has set their safety setting to “Nobody

If either of these things is true, you won’t be able to send direct messages to people on TikTok.

This guide will teach you how to fix this problem.

How to Fix TikTok Messages Not Working?

Why Can’t You Send Direct Messages on TikTok?

TikTok imposes certain restrictions on people who are below 16 years old.

One of them is not being able to send direct messages to someone else.

When you created your account, did you set your real birthday? This might be the problem if you’re not 16 years old.

The second cause of this problem is that you’re not mutual friends with the person you’re trying to message.

Did you send the other person a friend request? If they don’t follow you back, then you can’t send them direct messages.

You have to follow each other if you want to send direct messages.

Lastly, there’s a setting in TikTok named “Who can send you direct messages.”

By default, it’s set to “Friends” and not “Everyone.”

So, if you’re not friends with that person, direct messages are impossible.

How Can You Fix Messages Not Working on TikTok?

There are three things you can do to fix this problem on TikTok:

  • Create a new TikTok account and set a birthday advantageous to you
  • Have the other person follow you back
  • Contact TikTok support to change your birthday

If you already have a TikTok account and it says you’re below 16 years, there aren’t too many things you can do.

Either create a new TikTok account and set your birthday, so you’re over 16 years old or contact TikTok support.

You can tell them you’ve made a mistake during the account creation process.

In reality, you have more than 16 years old, so you should be able to send direct messages.

You can also contact the other person on another social media account and tell them to follow you.

If they don’t do that, even if you’re over 16 years old, you can’t send direct messages to them.

Below, you’ll find several solutions to this TikTok problem:

  • Contact TikTok Support

If you can’t afford to delete your TikTok account and create a new one, you should contact TikTok support.

Tell them you committed an error during the account creation process and set a wrong birthdate.

Think of a birthdate on the platform that lets you appear above 16 years old.

You can submit a report to TikTok from within the app.

To do this, go to Menu – Settings, and Privacy first.

The Menu icon is in the top-right corner. It looks like three horizontal dashes, one on top of the other.

It’s next to the calendar icon.

After you tap on it, it’ll open a new menu at the bottom. Select “Settings and Privacy” to open the TikTok Settings.

In the Settings, you’ll see several options and menus. Scroll down until you see the “Report a problem” option.

This will help you talk to TikTok support and explain your problem.

The “Report a problem” option is under the “Support” menu, near the “Help Center” and “Safety Center” options.

After you select “Report a Problem,” you’ll see several help options and guides.

There are various topics you can get assistance with, like “Creator tool,” “Videos and sounds,” “Follow/likes/comments,” and more.

Scroll down, look for the “Direct message” topic, and select it.

This will open a new window with topics related to direct messaging.

In the new window, you’ll see a couple of topics describing potential issues about direct messaging.

Look for the “Unable to send direct messages” topic. That’s the problem you’re having.

It should be second on the recommendation list, but it could be different for you.

Select it to open a new window with instructions to solve the issue.

TikTok will tell you to enable direct messaging in the “Privacy” settings.

But that option is enabled by default. If you haven’t disabled it manually, it should be enabled already.

You need to contact TikTok support, which means you need additional help with your problem.

Look at the bottom of the instruction list for the “Need more help?” option.

Tap on it to open another window.

This is where you can contact TikTok support.

You can leave a feedback report in the “Tell us your feedback” field.

Tell them you’ve entered the wrong birthday during the account creation process and want to change it.

Mention that you’re over 16 years old and that you want to be able to send direct messages on the platform.

Include your real birthday as well.

It doesn’t matter that you’re lying about your birthday because TikTok won’t verify your identity either way.

Tap on “Report” to send the support request to TikTok.

You should receive a reply within a few days.

  • Tell the other person to follow you back on TikTok

To talk to someone on TikTok through direct messages, you need to be friends with them.

They also have to follow you back for this to work.

If you suspect they haven’t followed you back, find a way to contact them and tell them to follow you.

Maybe they have a different social media account that you can contact them on.

Or maybe you have friends in common, and they can talk to them.

Alternatively, maybe the other person changes their settings to allow everyone to send them messages.

TikTok enables only friends to send you messages by default. People who aren’t on your Following list can’t send you messages.

  • Create a new TikTok account

If you don’t care about your TikTok account that much, you can always create another one and, this time, set the right birthday.

You can customize your birthdate even if you’re not 16 years or older.

But first, you need to log off from your current TikTok account.

To do this, open the Menu and go to “Settings & Privacy”

You know the drill by now. You can log off from your Settings, so open the Menu and tap “Settings and Privacy.”

This will take you to your TikTok settings.

Scroll down until you reach the bottom.

Once there, tap “Log out” to be the log-off procedure.

You need to confirm once you want to log out from your current TikTok account.

Once you’re outside your account, you’ll reach the log-in page of TikTok.

You can either log in with your existing TikTok account, another existing account, or create a new one.

To create a new TikTok account, look at the bottom of the page for a “Sign up” button.

Tap on it and then tap on “Use phone or email.”

This will take you to the account creation screen, and the first thing you can customize is your birthday.

This time, make sure you set your birthday to make you appear over 16 years old.

You have complete freedom because TikTok won’t verify your identity.

After you set a birthdate, tap on “Next” and continue with the account creation process.

Once you’re done, delete your old TikTok account and start anew on this one.

You should be able to send direct messages on the new account because you appear older than 16 years old.

Conclusion

TikTok doesn’t emphasize sending direct messages much, but it is a function many people use.

If you can’t use it for some reason, it could mean three things – you’re not 16 years old yet, the other person hasn’t followed you back, or the user has set their safety setting to “Nobody.”

Unforeseen errors, bugs, and other problems make their use of social media problematic. These things will be discussed amply in the guides on Whizcase.
