How Can You Unmute Someone on Instagram?

To mute someone, you need to go to the other person’s Instagram profile, select the “Following” button and then tap on “Mute”.

Then, you should turn off the switches for posts and stories. This will stop you from seeing what they post about.

To unmute them, do the same but instead of “Mute”, tap on “Unmute”. It’s simple if you think about it.

But what if you can’t remember their profile username and can’t find them?

The option to unmute them is only found on their profiles.

Or is it?

Well, follow the steps below to see how you can unmute someone on Instagram, even if you don’t remember their account usernames:

1. Open Instagram and go to your profile page

To find the list of people you muted, open Instagram and go to your profile page.

When you first open Instagram, you’ll land your feed. This is where you can see your friends’ posts and stories.

Look at the bar on your profile page at the bottom of the Instagram app.

You’ll see five icons. The one to the right will show your profile picture. Tap on it to go to your profile page.

This will open a different page with your profile settings.

2. Tap on Menu and select “Settings.”

Once you get to your profile page, you’ll need to open Settings.

Look for the Menu icon in the top-right corner. It’s the three-dash icon beside the “Story” (plus) icon.

Tap on it to open a menu at the bottom of the Instagram app.

There, you’ll see several settings like “Settings,” “Archive,” “Your activity,” “QR Code,” “Saved,” and more.

This is where you can better customize some of the preferences on your Instagram account.

Tap on “Settings” to continue with the guide and find the “muted accounts” option.

3. Select “Privacy”

After you select “Settings,” you’ll be redirected to the Settings page.

This is where you can customize every option and preference on Instagram, including Theme, Ads, Security, Notifications, and more.

There are several menus here. The one you need is “Privacy.”

Tap on “Privacy” to proceed. If you want to unmute someone, you’ll need to find the “muted accounts” option.

That option is in your “Privacy” settings.

4. Tap on “Muted Accounts”

In the “Privacy” settings, you’ll have several menus and options.

There’s the “Account privacy” option where you can make your account private, for instance.

This means no one will be able to find your account or follow it.

Then, you can customize your comments, posts, mentions, and story preferences.

You can change the settings here if you don’t want others to comment or mention you in posts.

Scroll down until you see the “Muted Accounts” option. It’s under the “Connections” menu.

It’s almost at the bottom of the page.

Tap on “Muted Accounts” and proceed to the next step.

5. Select the friend you want to unmute

In the “Muted Accounts” menu, you’ll see all the people you muted on Instagram.

Please search for the person you want to unmute and tap on their profile name.

This will take you to their profile page, where you can unmute them.

Remember that you can only unmute someone from their profile page.

You can’t do this from anywhere else. If they made their account private, you wouldn’t be able to unmute them.

After you tap on their profile picture, you’ll be taken to their profile page.

6. Select “Following” and “Mute”

After you get to their profile page, you won’t see any “Unmute” button.

That’s because the button is hidden. To find it, tap the “Following” button next to “Message.”

Notice that the “Following” button has a small arrow pointing down.

This means the button will open a menu with several options.

After you select “Following,” a menu will open at the bottom, where you can select several options.

One of them is “Mute.” Please select it and proceed with the next step.

7. Uncheck both “Posts” and “Stories.”

In the “Muted” menu, you can check or uncheck two options – Posts and Stories.

If you check both options, you won’t see what the other person posts or their stories.

That’s when the other person is muted. If you want to unmute them, uncheck the options like in the picture above.

This means you will see the other person’s posts and stories as usual.

When the options are unchecked, they turn grey. And when they’re checked, they become blue.

So, when someone is muted, the options are checked – blue.

When someone is unmuted, the options are unchecked – grey.

Conclusion

Instagram isn’t the most accessible social media platform sometimes.

Some of its features are hidden, and you can only find them if you stumble upon them by luck.

Or if you follow a guide. In this case, you’ve learned how to unmute someone on Instagram even if you don’t remember their username.

It’s highly recommended that you remember the usernames of those you muted, but it’s not always possible.

If you mute many people, remembering their usernames is not realistic.

In this case, go to your profile – Menu – Settings – Privacy- Muted Accounts.

There, you’ll find all the people you muted. Go to their profile, tap on “Following”“Mute,” and uncheck both “Posts” and “Stories” options.

FAQ

Will someone know I muted them on Instagram?

No, they won’t.

Instagram doesn’t notify them when you mute them.

It also doesn’t notify them if you unfollow them. However, they will notice this if they go to your profile.

But there’s no way they can know you muted them unless they ask you directly and you tell them.

Or if they look through your device and don’t see their content on your feed.

Muting someone on Instagram is a way to take a break from their content.

Maybe you don’t like it so much, or it takes too much space on your feed.

If you don’t want to break ties with that person, you can mute them and leave it like that.

Unforeseen errors, bugs, and other problems make their use of social media problematic. These things will be discussed amply in the guides on Whizcase.

I'll present the facts as they are, and offer quick and easy solutions for them.
