You can do that from your business account. The personal account doesn’t have this feature.

The process is simple. You need to switch to your business account, go to your Messages, hold-tap on the conversation, and then select “Mark as Unread”.

The Message icon is in the top-right corner of your Instagram feed. That’s where you can select it from.

Once you tap on it, you’ll be taken to your Instagram messages. This is where all your conversations on Instagram are at.

Select the conversation you want to unread by hold-tapping on it. Then, a new menu will appear at the bottom of the screen.

The first option on the list will be “Mark as unread.” Tap on it, and you’ve done it! Now the other person won’t know you’ve read their message.

But, as we said, this only works on professional Instagram accounts. The “Mark as unread” option will not appear if you’re on your account.

Read below if you don’t know how to switch to your professional business account!

How to Switch to Your Professional Business Account on Instagram?

Follow the steps below to do this:

  1. Click on your profile picture

The first step is going to your profile page. That’s where you can access your settings, which let you change your Instagram accounts.

To do this, tap on your profile picture (bottom-right corner of your Instagram feed). After you do this, you’ll be taken to your profile page.

  1. Select the Menu icon and then tap on “Settings

On your profile page, look for the Hamburger icon in the top-right corner of the screen. That’s your Instagram Menu. Tap on it to open a menu at the bottom of the screen.

In the menu, you should tap on “Settings.”

  1. Go to “Account
Go to “Account”

When you get to the Settings page, look for the “Account” option. You don’t need to scroll down to find it.

It’s under the “Ads” option and above the “Help” option. Instagram accounts are not the same as your main Instagram account, the one linked to your email address.

So, to switch to your professional account, you don’t need to log out of Instagram.

The “Account” section can help you switch between accounts.

  1. Tap on “Switch to Professional Account

Scroll down until you reach the bottom of the “Account” settings. There, you’ll find two blue options.

The first one is “Switch to a professional account.” Tap on it. This will let you begin the professional account creation process.

You probably don’t have a professional business account set up on Instagram. This will take a few moments!

  1. Tap on “Continue” four times

This is the start of the account creation setup. You’ll be told what a professional business account does and what you gain from it.

If you don’t plan on using a business account in the future, this doesn’t matter. You can skip these notifications by tapping on “Continue” four times.

  1. Choose a profession and click on “Done

In this step, you’ll be requested to choose your business niche and whether you want to display it on your profile or not.

If you’re not interested in this, choose anything and hit “Done.” Also, uncheck the ‘Display on profile” option.

  1. Choose “Business” and tap on “Next

Instagram will now ask what type of account you want to create, either a Creator or a Business one.

Select “Business” and hit “Next” to continue. You need a business account to unread messages on Instagram, not a Creator one.

You can still create a Creator account later on if you want to!

  1. Tap on “Don’t use my contact info
Tap on “Don’t use my contact info”
Tap on “Don’t use my contact info”

In this step, Instagram will ask for your business contact information. But if you don’t have any, you can skip this step.

Tap on “Don’t use my contact info” to proceed to the next step.

  1. Tap on “Don’t connect to a Facebook Page now
Tap on “Don’t connect to a Facebook Page now”
Tap on “Don’t connect to a Facebook Page now”

Don’t do it if you’re asked to connect to a Facebook page. Instead, tap “Don’t connect to a Facebook Page now” at the bottom of the screen.

Usually, business owners want to promote their Facebook business pages through Instagram.

It makes sense for them to connect their Facebook pages to Instagram. But you don’t care about that.

  1. Tap on the “X” button in the top-right corner
Tap on the “X” button in the top-right corner
Tap on the “X” button in the top-right corner

In the middle, you’ll see everything you need to do to set up your professional business account on Instagram.

But you don’t have to do all that. Skip this step by tapping on the X button in the top-right corner.

This will take you back to your feed, but now you’re connected to your business account. Now, you can unread your messages on Instagram by going to Messages – hold-tap the chat, and tap on “Mark as unread.”

Restrict the Other Person’s Account

Another way of unreading someone’s message is to restrict them. But this comes with several other measures, such as:

  1. Making their public comments invisible on your posts;
  2. They won’t see your Active Status anymore;
  3. Their messages will end up in your “Message Requests” spam section;

If you have no issues with this, go to that person’s Instagram page, tap on the three-dot icon and then select “Restrict.”

They won’t know you’ve read their messages even if you do. They also won’t know when you’re online or offline.

This is a good alternative to unreading messages on Instagram, but it only works before you restrict someone.

If you read their message and restrict it afterward, it won’t be unread.

Conclusion

If you want to unread a message on Instagram, the simplest way to do it is by using your business account.

Switch to your business account, go to Chats, hold-tap on the chat you want to unread, and then select “Mark as unread’.

Alternatively, you can restrict the other user before they send you any messages. Even if you read their messages, they won’t know.

Unforeseen errors, bugs, and other problems make their use of social media problematic. These things will be discussed amply in the guides on Whizcase.

I'll present the facts as they are, and offer quick and easy solutions for them.
