What Are Zero-Tolerance Violations?

TikTok says that zero-tolerance violations include posting child abuse materials but aren’t limited to that.

I don’t know for sure what other violations are included here, but if I were to guess, I’d say that the following may also fall under zero-tolerance:

• Highly graphical videos of torture
• Live extremism videos
• Highly sickening/unpleasant videos of a graphical nature
• Any video that shows people being severely harmed

If you post something that falls under the zero-tolerance policy, TikTok will ban your account permanently without further notice.

You won’t receive a warning either. You’ll only be notified about the ban after logging out of your account.

What Happens When I Break the TikTok Rules?

That depends on the severity of your violation. Did you post something incredibly gruesome and graphic? Expect a ban in that case.

You may only receive a warning if it is something of a lesser magnitude, like veiled bullying or slightly offensive content.

Whenever you post a video, it may be put under review. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, just a regular check-up. If your video doesn’t break any rules, it’ll go through the verification unscathed.

However, your video may also be reviewed if someone reports it or if it gets very popular. Here’s what happens when a video is under review, according to TikTok:

• The video is removed if it breaks any rules. You’ll get notified of the reason for the removal. You can appeal this decision and possibly win the appeal
• The video is posted normally if it doesn’t break any rules
• The video can be removed in the future if someone reports it and a violation is found

Remember that not all videos are put under review before being posted. The TikTok moderators can’t possibly verify every video posted on TikTok at all times.

But they’ll eventually verify your videos too. And if they find anything out of the norm, they may remove it.

Temporary & Permanent Bans on TikTok

When you break the TikTok User Guidelines, moderators can warn or ban you. There are two types of bans:

• Temporary bans generally last between 24 to 48 hours and will restrict you from doing one or several actions (uploading videos, commenting, editing your profile, sending DMs, starting a live, etc.)
• Permanent bans will restrict access to your account indefinitely. You’ll receive a notification about the reason for the ban

Your first violation will never be a ban unless it’s a zero-tolerance violation. In that case, you’ll get permanently banned outright.

Starting with your second violation, it’s 100% up to the moderators to judge the severity of your violation and the appropriate punishment.

Previously, I said that 4-5 violations are generally required to get you banned. But that’s not always the case.

The TikTok mods might ban you after only 2 violations if they are severe enough. Or you may not get banned even after 7 small violations.

What Can Get Me Banned on TikTok?

There are a lot of things that can get you banned from TikTok. Though, you’d have to post some controversial stuff to risk a ban.

Here’s a list of things that can get you banned on TikTok, courtesy of MakeUseOf:

• Explicit content – Nudity, exploitation, graphic content, and abuse are all against the TikTok ToS and will result in a ban. Even content that glorifies grooming may get banned
• Content that threatens public safety – Threatening other people or encouraging violence against people or groups of people will get you banned on TikTok
• Self-harm or the promotion of self-harm – If you promote self-injuring or eating disorders, you will get banned on TikTok
• Graphically-violent content – This could be gore, overly-explicit acts of violence, and gratuitously-shocking materials, and they are not allowed on TikTok
• Blackmail content – It’s illegal to blackmail others, even on TikTok. You can’t threaten to dox, hack or publicize information about someone else because you’ll be banned
• Promoting illegal activities – If you promote acts that break the law in any way, you’ll likely get banned on TikTok. This includes animal harm, violence against humans, human trafficking, etc.
• Misinformation, impersonation & spam – Trying to trick people by impersonating someone else, promoting misinformation that may lead to harming someone else, or simply spamming content may get you banned on TikTok

If you don’t want to get banned, avoid controversial content. Try not to insult other people and generally be a good person.

When someone annoys you, try being the smarter person, and don’t get too confrontational or graphic with your words.

Even if someone reports a comment you made, you won’t get banned outright unless you said something really bad.
