Snapchat Decoded: Understanding the Grey X Next to a Name

To summarize, the grey X symbol next to someone’s name on Snapchat can mean that:

  1. You haven’t accepted the other person’s friend request
  2. You can remove the other person’s chat
  3. That person is not your friend on Snapchat
  4. That person has blocked you

If you want to remove the X symbol, either accept their friend request, remove them from your chat window, or send them a friend request.

Alternatively, ask them to unblock you

There’s more to be said about the grey X, though, so I recommend going over my guide below!

When Does the Grey X Appear?

As I said, the grey X typically means that someone has sent you a friend request, and you still haven’t accepted it.

But it can also mean that the person you’re talking to isn’t your friend on Snapchat. The X allows you to remove the conversation from your active chats.

Tap on it to remove that chat permanently from your Snapchat interface. Alternatively, you can add that person on Snapchat and become friends.

The X symbol is there to remind you that the other person isn’t your friend. In a way, it incentivizes you to add them on Snapchat.

Another scenario where the grey X may appear is when your friend blocks you. Since you won’t be able to talk to the again, an X appears next to their chat option.

How Can I Remove the X Symbol Next to Someone’s Name on Snapchat?

To remove the X symbol next to someone’s name on Snapchat, you either have to accept/reject their friend request or send them a friend request, depending on the situation.

If the other person has already sent you a friend request, an X symbol will appear next to their chat name until you accept or reject the request.

If they haven’t sent a friend request, then you can remove the X symbol in two ways:

  • Remove their chat completely
  • Send them a friend request

In both of these cases, you’ll get rid of the X next to someone’s name, but one method also removes that person from your Snapchat account.

You can also ask the other person to unblock you on Snapchat if they’ve blocked you. But you’ll need to do it on another social media platform since it’s impossible on Snapchat.

If you have other questions about Snapchat symbols, comment down below, and I’ll reply as soon as possible.

My name is Alex and I have a knack for social media in all its shapes and forms. I’ve dealt with such things for quite some time and I noticed that many people have issues with social media and technicalities.

Unforeseen errors, bugs, and other problems make their use of social media problematic. These things will be discussed amply in the guides on Whizcase.

I'll present the facts as they are, and offer quick and easy solutions for them.
